Auditing
To ensure that your WHS systems continue to work effectively and your operations are legally compliant, it is essential that auditing be conducted regularly. Auditing is not a “tick and flick” exercise using a checklist, but rather a systematic process assessing all system elements (and their integration) to determine effectiveness.
The primary objective of audits is to find systems strengths and weaknesses to allow improvements to be made and potentially expand the “good things” that are occurring. Should lots of weaknesses be identified in an audit, it may indicate that the system is ready for failure – something that no organisation would welcome. To remedy potential system failures, a non-conformance may be raised to ensure that corrective/preventive actions are implemented as soon as possible.
Audits are not a negative process of “gotcha”, they are a positive process where organisations look at what they are doing, what their system (and legislation) says they should be doing, then identifying ways of improving – the focus of audits is on the “system”, not individual workers.
To ensure that the integrity of the audit process is not compromised, it is essential that competent auditors conduct audits, particularly when satisfying regulatory and Australian Standard requirements.
Insight Safety Management has had many, many years of experience in all types of systems auditing (AS4801, ISO14001 and ISO9001) to mention a few. Again, the process does not need to be complicated, but rather specific to the nature/scale of the business and auditing criteria.
